Abstract:

In the 1930s, left-wing filmmakers entered the film industry, attempting to promote revolutionary ideas through film, a popular art form. Among them, New Year’s Money, written by Xia Yan and directed by Zhang Shichuan, not only combines the entertaining aspects of film art with the revolutionary nature of left-wing discourse by vividly showcasing the lives of people from different social classes in Shanghai through the circulation of a silver dollar, but also uses creative substitutions, such as the insert song Song of New Life, to call for new women and social forces to move forward. By examining the civic interest, Hollywood elements, and soundscape of the film, it can be found that left-wing filmmakers, while pursuing entertainment and commercial profits, not only explored social issues through film art but also promoted left-wing revolutionary discourse through “surprise” elements, such as film insert songs, carrying out an invisible revolution, and thereby fulfilling the literary mission of educating society and building a new “silver world”.
