Abstract:

Since Peter N. Stearns proposed the study of “emotionology” in the 1980s, the theoretical methods of the history of emotions have been constantly updated, the research team has been continuously expanding, and empirical research has been increasingly in-depth. Historians’ records of emotions did not begin in the twentieth century. As early as in the writings of ancient historians, we can find various emotions of people at that time. Emotions permeated ancient historians’ depictions of historical figures and their accounts of military, political, and diplomatic affairs. This was not because the ancients had more abundant emotions, but because emotions are an inherent trait of human beings. The records of emotions by ancient historians in people’s speech, behavior, and the historical process indicate that the relationship between emotions and historical writing has a long-standing origin. However, since modern times, with the advancement of the scientificization of historiography, emotions have become increasingly incompatible with the pursuit of “objective historiography” in Rankean historiography and have thus been neglected. The rise of the history of emotions is closely related to the development and evolution of modern and contemporary historiography. Its prosperity not only challenges the traditional historiography’s deprecation of it in modern times but also reflects the development direction of contemporary historiography.
