Abstract: An ethical critique of the “unmanned” goal of autonomous driving technology must go beyond superficial challenges such as decision-making dilemmas and responsibility gaps, and delve into the philosophical crisis of artificial intelligence agents replacing human subjectivity. Analyzing through the framework of Aristotle’s “four causes” reveals that the trend of “unmanned” is rooted in technological capital’s systematic deprivation of human freedom of action and the space for virtuous practice, through algorithmic rationality and data fetishism. To address this crisis, the key lies in reaffirming the fundamental principle of “humans legislating for themselves” and constructing a virtuous ethical space oriented towards “acting for others”, thereby guiding autonomous driving technology away from the “unmanned” illusion and back onto a human-centered value track.
