Abstract: Urban narratives possess dual attributes of geographical space description and literary imagination. Literary geography, an interdisciplinary field that integrates perspectives from literature and geography, can systematically integrate its theoretical viewpoints into the interpretive framework and academic approaches of urban narrative studies. This approach explores the deep-seated influence of local traditions, historical imagination, and spatial memory on the creation and reception of urban narratives, and establishes a coherent research reference system that connects the classical traditions and modern transformations of Chinese urban narratives. Drawing on the observational logic in imaging studies, urban narrative research can construct a “four-scene perspective” comprising “long shot” “medium shot” “close shot” and “close-up”. The “long shot” aims to map macro-literary landscapes and analyze the divisions in literary ecosystems. The “medium shot” focuses on the “twin-cities” phenomenon in inter-city interactions, revealing their cultural dialogue mechanisms. The “close shot” delves into the interior of a single city, tracing the evolution of literary forms from urban chronicles and urban notes to urban novels, as well as the accumulation of spatial meanings. The “close-up” analyzes the symbolic significance of specific spatial settings and the infinite possibilities of spatial production. The key to this research lies in continuously exploring, activating, and reconstructing the unique narrative research paradigms and spiritual schemas of cities, thus promoting urban narrative studies into broader historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts and providing theoretical pathways for constructing a localized spatial poetics.
