“Live for Yourself” or “Live Your Own Way”——Rethinking the Localization of Chinese Individualized Proposition

  • Online:2021-10-24 Published:2021-10-24

Abstract:

The case of Su Min’s self driving tour once triggered a public debate on“live for yourself”or “live for others”, which is inseparable from the individualized proposition put forward by Baker and others. However, the deep reason why Baker’s individualization proposition has been misinterpreted as “live for yourself”since it entered China is that the traditional Chinese logic of individual relationship and subjectivity cannot be accommodrte such a concept rooted in modern multiculturalism. In the process of localization of Beck’s individualized proposition,“live your own way”is a translation that is both faithful to the original text and localization. It can help break the traditional concept of individuality, put“live for yourself”and“live for others”in a contradictory relation, and also represents a conscious localization effort.
