Abstract:

As key metaphors for sound and its social interpretation, noise and silence are important propositions in contemporary sound research. Starting from Levi-Strauss’s anthropological theory, Schafer constructed a naturalistic contemporary noise theory through concepts such as sacred noise, negative silence, and positive silence, thus offered antidote to noise by means of such practices as international noise abatement campaigns thus the World Soundscape Project. Contemporary sound research is practically significant for urban landscape, architectural design, environmental protection, musical composition, etc. Its true value lies in rejecting the manipulation and oppression of sacred noise and replacing the passivity of lifeless silence with a positive one full of creative possibilities, thus liberating human from technology and noise.
