Abstract:

Influenced by the research trend of “newspaper civilization” and based on the inheritance of the research on China’s image in the West, especially in France, the analysis of China-related articles published in FranceObservateur and L’Express from the perspective of literary and cultural history in the period of 1955-1960, can present a side of how the West reshaped China’s image in the mid-1950s. Although we can only touch the tip of the iceberg of the Western narrative of China’s image in the sense of social imagination, the reconstruction of the historical scene and the restoration of the historical sensibility not only restore the ways in which this image has been continuously reshaped and perfected—imagining and alienating the distant other, understanding and portraying the objective reality from multiple angles, and making in-depth observations and reports on the construction of socialism, etc., we can also see how the Western image of China has been continuously reshaped and perfected in the mid-1950s. In-depth observation and coverage of socialist construction, etc., they also offer a clearer understanding of how the “image of China” participated in the transformation of the discourse of power. This participation, in turn, influenced the evolution of French cultural and literary history in the mid-20th century within the realm of social anthropology.
