Abstract:

Fernand Braudel’s theory of the longue durée (long duration) and Raymond Williams’ concept of the “long revolution” provide a methodological framework for examining the evolution of modernity and civilizational transformation in Shanghai urban literature from the 19th to the 20th century. Within this framework, the study of urban literature encompasses perspectives including, but not limited to: focusing on the cultural field of semi-colonial Shanghai, analyzing the formation of civil consciousness within concession contexts, and exploring how fashion, media technology, and sensory experiences reshaped literary expression. Studying urban literature not only enables us to integrate fragments of literary history from a long “revolution perspective” and re-examine the path of Chinese modernity in cross-civilizational dialogues, but also requires us to recognize the necessity of close reading methods for maintaining the intrinsic value of literature itself.
