Abstract:

The practicality of an algorithm encompasses three aspects: the “material-activity” of the algorithm, the cultural practices of the actors associated with the algorithm, and the consequences of algorithmic practices. By examining the algorithmic practices of “digital creative labor”, it is observed that recommendation algorithms possess characteristics of data dependency, platformization, and personalization. The algorithmic initiative is manifested through differentiated recommendation lists, thereby outlining the logic of visibility management dominated by algorithms. Through diverse sources of algorithmic knowledge and cross-platform media usage, “digital creative labor” develops varying patterns of algorithmic perception and behavioral strategies, revealing the interactive logic between users and algorithms. The consequences of subject uncertainty resulting from algorithmic practices and their impact on algorithmic construction demonstrate the mutual construction between algorithms and users. The mutual construction inherent in algorithmic practices provides a new perspective for multi-dimensional algorithm governance.
